MEHAYO Farm Project at Mkundi
MEHAYO Centre operate a farm located at Mkundi in Morogoro that serves as an important source of food for the children and residents living at the centre. Our main crops include maize, millet and sunflower which help support food security and reduce the cost of purchasing food.
The older children living in Mkundi actively participate in farming activities. They assist with land preparation, planting, weeding and other farm work using hand hoes. Their involvement helps them develop practical agricultural skills, a sense of responsibility and teamwork. However, relying on manual tools makes farming labor-intensive and time-consuming, limiting the size of land that can be cultivated and affecting productivity.
To improve efficiency and increase production, we are seeking support to acquire a tractor or access to mechanized farming equipment. A tractor would significantly reduce the time and effort required for land preparation and other farming operations, enabling us to cultivate larger areas and produce more food for the centre.
Challenges Facing the Farm
One of the major challenges affecting our farm is damage caused by livestock from neighboring pastoralist communities. Cattle frequently enter the farm and destroy crops, resulting in significant losses and reduced harvests. To address this issue, we have begun planting live fence trees around the farm boundary. Once mature, these trees will act as a natural fence and help protect the crops. Unfortunately many of the young plants are being damaged by termites before they can fully establish themselves.
Areas Where Support Is Needed
We kindly appeal for support in the following areas:
Acquisition of a tractor or mechanized farming equipment.
Construction of a durable fence around the farm to prevent livestock intrusion.
Supply of tree seedlings and termite-control measures to strengthen the live fence project.
Agricultural inputs and technical support to improve farm productivity.
