Building Hope That Sustains: MEHAYO’s Student Housing Project
1 / 13
At MEHAYO Centre every step forward is guided by one goal to create a better, more stable future for the children we serve. For years, space has been one of our greatest challenges. Classrooms have quietly carried an extra burden, transforming into sleeping areas for some children and even staff when the day ends. It’s a reality we have carried with resilience, but one we have always been determined to change.
But at MEHAYO we believe in solutions that do more than solve today’s problem, we believe in building for tomorrow. That is the vision behind the Student Housing Project. The new Student Housing Project stands on the ground where an old dormitory once existed, the one that was severely affected by flooding and eventually had to be abandoned. Where there was once loss and limitation there is rebuild and hope.
With the generous support of the AFAS Foundation and the Swiss Embassy, construction began early in January on a housing facility that represents more than just walls and a roof, it represents a sustainable future. Today the structure stands tall and the roof is in place; the building is taking shape which is visible proof that change is happening.
But what makes this project truly powerful is its purpose. Once completed, the rooms will be rented out creating a reliable source of income for MEHAYO Centre. This income will directly support:
●Daily care for the children
●Educational needs
●Health and welfare services
●Ongoing operations of the centre
In other words this project is not just about construction it is about independence. It ensures that MEHAYO can continue to support vulnerable children not only today, but for many years to come.
Yet even with this progress, a critical need remains. Some children and staff are still sleeping in classrooms due to limited accommodation. While this project strengthens our financial sustainability, it does not fully solve the immediate need for safe and dedicated living spaces.
That is why we are now seeking support to construct an additional hostel specifically for children and staff. We envision a MEHAYO where:
●Classrooms are used only for learning
●Every child has a safe, comfortable place to sleep
●Staff can live with dignity as they care for others
We are deeply thankful to the AFAS Foundation and the Swiss Embassy for making this project possible and for believing in a future where MEHAYO stands strong and self-sustaining.
Now we invite you to be part of the next step. Help us complete this journey where one project builds sustainability and the next builds a home.
